The Jellurgal Walkabout Tour is something I wish we had done years and years ago and I will never ever walk Burleigh headland the same again! We’ve loved being out and about more in our community since we’re all staying close to home for our hols. The Walkabout tour is held each Thursday at 10am and after a short video presentation you are taken on a guided walk around the headland where you learn about traditional life pre-contact, bush tucker, fishing and hunting and the important ecological practices and connection to the land displayed by the Yugambeh speaking people. The tour lasts for around two hours – we did the Oceanview Track and then up and over the hill via the Rainforest Circuit.

The tour is best suited for school age children and upwards – if you have a bub I’d recommend a carrier as the track can get busy and there is limited space. The children were given little booklets at the start of the walk that they enjoyed filling in as the tour progressed where they learnt about areas of significance or spotted one of the many different animals that live in the area. We started the tour with a Borobi (Koala) snoozing in the tree just above us and along the way spotted three beautiful Tawny Frogmouth Owls snoozing on a tree branch!
